Pest Control and the Environment

The pest control industry has advanced considerably over the last two decades. Whereas once, clients would simply request to “get rid of ’em“, CMS are regularly asked now about environmental issues and concerns around pest control.

This is a great trend. CMS has evolved its approach over the years to pest control with improvements in technology, changes in government standards and client attitudes.

Alternate Pest Control Approaches

In numbers of cases, there are other ways of dealing with pests besides the use of pesticides. These include:

• Altering the conditions that insects, birds and rodent pests prefer. This may be as simple as removing food sources (such as food scraps) that attract cockroaches, ants and flies;
• Creating physical barriers such as nets, barriers and flyscreens to prevent entry of birds, possums and insects;
• Working on a pro-active basis where pests are prevented before an issue occurs rather than treated after a pest control issue arises;
• Use of traps to relocate pests such as possums and birds;
• Keeping areas clear of unnecessary clutter (such as boxes and packing materials) and recycling or disposing of such material thoughtfully and promptly;
• Understand the lifecycle of pests to break that lifecycle to stop pest control issues re-arising.

Today, synthetic pesticides are still required to treat many pest issues and remain the most effective and healthiest and safest approach to pest management. While many of these pest control chemicals have toxic properties, they are only hazardous if used in the wrong way, handled carelessly or disposed of thoughtlessly.

• monitor the pest control market for new pesticides and treatments and adopt those where they are more effective, safer  and better environmentally;
• understand the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for every chemical and pesticide that we use to ensure that it is used safely and healthily;
• use correct dosages of pesticides and the most appropriate method of application. In most cases, a very small amount of rodenticide or termiticide in bait boxes is all that is required to do a complete job reducing wastage and wasteful disposal;
• using the most appropriate chemical for the job at hand.
